Nervous System

The Inner Work Was the Growth Strategy

I tripled my real estate business from $20M to $60M. The spreadsheet wasn't the reason.

This one's for the most successful exhausted person you know.

Good chance that's you.

You answer the text at 10pm. You say yes before the question is all the way out of someone's mouth. People call that ambition. For twenty years, so did I.

It literally carried my real estate business to $20 million in volume as a solo agent. It's also why the business parked there and refused to move, while I became more overwhelmed and angry.

So what finally moved it? Not a new lead source or a slicker CRM. What rebuilt me to $60 million was leaning on my own authenticity and learning to calm my own nervous system. And I can show you where every dollar came from.

I know how that sounds, the Realtor found her chakras. Stick with me anyway, because I'm the last person who should be saying this, and that's exactly why it's worth hearing.

At $20 million I looked like I was winning. In reality, my jaw clenched so hard my teeth chipped. I walked into listing appointments playing a character I thought sellers wanted. And boy did I look it, too! Agreeable to a fault, available at hours no sane person keeps. I clearly thought the tension was the drive. I subconsciously believed if I ever set it down, everything would come apart in my hands.

Here's what I totally missed, and likely what's manifesting in your business right now, too. Your clients read and feel your state before you utter a single word. A seller deciding whether to trust you with the biggest asset they own isn't (yet) grading your credentials, their own body and nervous system is questioning one thing: is this person safe to follow?

You can fix your face all you want. They're reading the rest of you.

So I did the unglamorous work. Therapy. Months of somatic practice that felt completely ridiculous, right up until the morning I noticed the smallest change. I never put a minute of it in a marketing plan, I just did it to find some peace in my brain. It changed the numbers anyway.

Deals stopped dying in the small cracks because I was managing the client's hysteria. When I wasn't leaking stress across the table trying to act like someone I wasn't, people settled, and people who feel settled sign and then send their friends. My read on a room got sharper, because a calm brain catches what a flooded one blows right past. And I finally had something left in the tank for the part that actually scaled me. Me was the important part! That's why they chose to work with ME in the first place.

If you're reading this with your shoulders up around your ears, I'm not scolding you. I was you, I just think the order is upside down. You're saving your own steadiness for later, for when things finally settle down, but the business already runs on it. Building on a fried nervous system is like painting one side of your house while the other side is on fire. Put out the fire, then paint the house.

Keep your systems. I'll teach you mine, referral engine and all. Just know the most expensive line on your books is a frazzled operator, and right now that operator is you. Settle that, and watch what you build!

One thing to try this week. Before your next big conversation, whatever it is, breathe out longer than you breathe in. Four counts in, eight counts out. Six rounds, in the car, before you ever touch the door handle. Nobody can see you do it, the person across the table will feel it before you say a word.

THE UNCOMMON TOOLKIT

Why the long exhale works, for the skeptic in you. Your out-breath is wired to the parasympathetic side of your nervous system, the part that tells your body the danger has passed. Drag the exhale out past the inhale and your heart rate comes down on command. Cheapest reset you own, and it runs under a minute.

Go forth and do good things!
